What to Expect

With the LAP-BAND® surgery, complications can arise, and a procedure to remove the gastric band may be necessary.

Complications can have varying levels of severity from lack of adequate weight loss and food intolerance to band slippage or erosion. Report any problems and symptoms you are experiencing with your physician so they can determine your personalized treatment plan.

Some other common complications, include:
• Heartburn
• Acid reflux
• Esophageal dilation
• Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
• Difficulty swallowing
• Pouch dilation
• Port infection
• Flipped or migrating port
• Band slippage
• Band erosion

LAP-BAND removal surgery is done laparoscopically, followed by a short stay at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center. Patients may be a candidate to have gastric sleeve surgery or gastric bypass surgery on the same day that the LAP-BAND is removed.

Recovery will depend on your overall health history. Be sure to rest and allow your body and incision to heal. It is recommended to take two - four weeks off from work or school to recover from removal surgery but can differ based on your individual needs.
