Award Winning Hospital Recognized Nationally for Excellence in Cardiovascular Services and Care by Truven Health Analytics

Yesterday Truven Health Analytics named Saddleback Memorial Medical Center a Nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospital. Saddleback Medical Center is one of only five California hospitals to be recognized with this honor.

Truven Health Analytics is a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of health care. The 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals recognized have outperformed their peers in inpatient and extended outcomes, clinical process, efficiency, and cost for the two most common cardiovascular conditions, heart attacks and heart failure; and most common interventions, percutaneous coronary intervention and coronary artery bypass graft surgery (PCI and CABG).

“Decades ago, we recognized the importance of creating a more scientific approach to improving medical outcomes. This has led to Saddleback Medical Center becoming a national pioneer in best-practice, evidence-based medicine” said Michael Gault, MD, Medical Director of Cardiology, Saddleback Medical Center. “And there’s the very human side of the care that remains our focus; every member of our team is passionate about listening closely to our patients and transforming what we hear to ensure we meet the changing needs of our patients and their families.”

To ensure fair, objective analysis of a hospital’s performance, Truven Health Analytics uses only public data sources and peer-reviewed methodologies for evaluations. The 17th annual review looked at 1,005 hospitals that provide medical and surgical treatment for heart disease. The list includes the 50 that scored highest on heart attack and heart failure treatments and coronary bypass and angioplasty surgeries.

Overall, the top 50 hospitals did significantly better on mortality rates and lengths of stay. When compared with their peers, they had:

  • 27 percent fewer patient deaths from heart attack
  • 20.2 percent fewer deaths from heart failure
  • 35.5 percent fewer deaths among patients undergoing coronary artery-bypass graft surgery

In addition, length of stay was shorter by 15.2 percent and 10.9 percent for heart attack and heart failure patients, respectively, at top hospitals.

“This year’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals have delivered excellent care in a time of sweeping change in the health care system," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance and improvement at Truven Health Analytics. “Saddleback Medical Center’s success is a testament to the strong focus by cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, and cardiovascular service administrators and staff on basic care and outcomes.”

According to Truven's analysis, if all cardiovascular hospitals performed at the same level as the top 50 hospitals, 8,000 more lives could be saved annually, nearly 3,500 heart complications could be avoided, and more than $1.3 billion in healthcare spending could be eliminated.
