Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center recently announced that the MemorialCare Breast Center at Orange Coast is only the fourth program in Orange County to be designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). MemorialCare Breast Center at Orange Coast was recently awarded a three-year full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.

By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in all of the College’s voluntary, breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.

“The ACR’s recognition is a testament to the clinical excellence demonstrated by our dedicated team of cancer specialists and radiologists,” said Marcia Manker, CEO at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center.

The breast imaging services at this center are fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that this facility has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.

“We are excited to have received this prestigious designation and feel privileged to provide our breast cancer patients high quality imaging services,” said, Richard Reitherman, M.D., medical director of breast imaging at MemorialCare Breast Center at Orange Coast. “This designation is also a testament to our incredible breast imaging and mammography team that is second to none in its expertise and dedication to the field of breast cancer.”

The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs for focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology, as well as the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
