Helen Macfie, Pharm.D., MemorialCare Chief Transformation Officer, has been named to two Becker’s Healthcare national lists of outstanding health care executives—50 U.S. Experts in Patient Safety and 8 Top Chief Transformation Officers.

The Patient Safety list features influential executives, clinicians, advocates, researchers and legislators who, says Becker’s Healthcare, “work tirelessly to improve and champion successful patient safety initiatives and eliminate medical errors at government organizations, prominent journals, hospitals and health systems.” A new executive suite role, the Chief Transformation Officer helps lead organizations during significant changes in health care delivery.

At MemorialCare Dr. Macfie has executive responsibility for system transformation, performance improvement, clinical quality, patient safety, patient-family experience, strategic planning and Value Added Teams. She speaks nationally on strategy, Lean principles, performance improvement and patient safety. Previously she was MemorialCare’s Senior Vice President for Performance Improvement and received its Living Our Leadership Award.

She serves on the Joint Commission Pioneers in Quality Advisory Panel, California Hospital Association’s Hospital Quality Institute and State Quality Committee, California Hospital Assessment and Report (CHART) Board, Institute for Health Care Improvement (IHI) Patient Safety Executive faculty, California statewide Advisory Boards and participated on the Malcolm S. Baldridge Examiner Panel.

Dr. Macfie’s 20-year career in organizational improvement at MemorialCare and other organizations was preceded by experience designing hospital pharmacist services. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy at University of California San Francisco School of Pharmacy with a clinical residency at University of California San Diego and administrative residency at Long Beach Medical Center. She became an Advisory Board Fellow (FABC) after completing a leadership fellowship.
