More than 300 community members showed their support for the Women Guiding Women: Cancer Support & Education Program, part of the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute at Long Beach Medical Center, at the 6th Annual “Love Your Mentors” Fashion Show & Silent Auction on Saturday, March 12.

“Through the ‘Love Your Mentors’ Fashion Show, we want to give hope to the women who are newly diagnosed with cancer,” says Randal Snyder, co-manager, Women Guiding Women: Cancer Support & Education. “Seeing the courage of survivors is an inspiration for those newly diagnosed women.”

The fashion show featured mentors, who are cancer survivors, walking down the runway in CAbi designer clothing in celebration of women who have defeated breast and gynecologic cancer. A stage also was provided for mentors to share their personal stories about how they overcame their battles with breast or gynecologic cancer.

Women Guiding Women: Cancer Support & Education is dedicated to providing newly diagnosed patients with mentors, who are cancer survivors, to help them build a relationship with women who share a common bond of battling cancer. The program shows support to any woman, regardless of financial means or where they receive treatment. The mentor program is especially unique because the women involved devote their time to supporting newly diagnosed cancer patients in their time of need.

While family and friends can lend a great deal of comfort and encouragement, having someone who has gone through similar experiences to offer support and friendship helps facilitate the healing process. Through their own experience, Women Guiding Women mentors deliver knowledge, support, encouragement and friendship through over-the-phone support and information.

During the silent auction, attendees also were able to bid on more than 150 auction items, which were donated by several local and notable designers and vendors. Auction items included fine jewelry, original artwork, restaurant certificates, pet grooming certificates and more.
