Cardioversion is an external noninvasive therapy to treat many types of abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias), most commonly atrial fibrillation. For stable, ventricular tachycardias, a cardioversion can help put your heart back into normal rhythm. During the procedure, EKG patches and cardioversion pads are placed on your chest near your heart and sometimes on your back. A cardiologist or surgeon uses an electric current to reset the heart's rhythm back to its regular pattern. When the electrical shock is delivered from the cardioversion pads the heart quickly reverts the arrhythmia back to a normal rhythm.
