A craniotomy is the surgical removal of a piece of the skull to access part of the brain. The piece of bone that is removed during a craniotomy is referred to as a bone flap and is replaced after surgery. Craniotomies are performed for many reasons including sampling brain tissue, removing tumors, removing blood clots, relieving pressure in the brain after an injury or stroke or repairing a skull fracture or brain aneurysm.
