Deborah

Date of Surgery: January 9, 2007
Start Weight: 297
Current Weight: 123

Deborah was determined to get down to her goal weight, but not without a little motivation and education first. “I spent months before my procedure making sure I was on the right track for success, something I would definitely recommend to anyone who is thinking about weight-loss surgery. I learned how to eat right and live a healthy lifestyle before I had the surgery so I could ensure success. I made sure to take advantage of all of the classes and support groups offered by the program at the Center for Obesity beforehand and I can honestly say that I live that lifestyle every day. I don’t diet anymore like I used to, I just live the way I should and eat decadent foods in moderation and I don’t deprive myself. After the surgery and living this new lifestyle, I am able to exercise regularly and have amazingly dropped down to the weight I was when I was in high school – a weight I never thought I would see again at the age of 45. I have gone from a size 4X to a size one!”

Deborah was motivated from the beginning to get down to a healthy weight not only for herself, but for her family as well. She attributes her success to her support system and the love of her grandchildren. “I have three grandchildren whom I adore. Before the gastric bypass surgery I was unable to get down on the ground with them and play because it was so difficult for me to get up. My ankles would swell and I couldn’t even walk a quarter of a mile without problems. Now I am able to pick my grandkids up off the ground, swim with them and even outrun them – it’s amazing!”

“I also think it’s very important to educate your family and friends about the surgery. My family was a little apprehensive, but since I did the research and included them in the entire process, they learned how beneficial it would be for me. Now I can truly say it was the best decision I have made for myself and for my family and friends.”

With all the support she received, Deborah is able to enjoy life again and do the things she loves comfortably, like travelling. “I go on cruises all the time with my girlfriends and I don’t shy away from social activities like I used to. I go swimming and do all the fun things on the boat. I’m proud of myself and feel like a new person. One who can enjoy the exciting things life has to offer.”
