Lymphedema Program (Outpatient)
The Memorial Rehabilitation’s Lymphedema program at Long Beach Memorial is listed in the National Lymphedema Network Resource Guide as a recognized treatment program is for Lymphedema. The program focuses on teaching patients how to effectively manage their lymphedema on an independent basis through intensive one-on-one training. Individual sessions can last 60 to 120 minutes per day, depending on the severity of the condition. The Long Beach Memorial team of licensed physical therapists are certificated in Complete Decongestion Therapy (CDT). CDT is the most clinically proven therapy for lymphedema.Lymphedema is a condition in which a part of the body, most often the arms or legs, is severely swollen due to an accumulation of protein and fluid in the affected area. Lymphedema can be a complication from cancer treatment or a congenital condition. If left untreated, lymphedema can lead to chronic pain, infections or limb loss.
Lymphedema symptoms include:
- Pain.
- Decreased range of motion.
- Decreased limb strength.
- Decreased functional abilities.
