Electrophysiology Study (EPS)

An Electrophysiology study (EPS) is a minimally invasive diagnostic test where a special electrode catheter is inserted into a vein and guided to the heart to study your heart's electrical system. The catheter senses electrical impulses in various areas of the heart. With the special electrode catheter your physician can stimulate parts of the heart in order to identify areas that may cause life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). During an EPS medications can be tested to see how your heart reacts and to determine which medication is most appropiate. This procedure is performed in a cardiovascular catheterization laboratory, with local anesthesia to numb the test area. An IV (intravenous line) into your arm or hand will provide you with medication to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
