Cerebral Angiography

Cerebral angiography of the brian
Cerebral angiography is an exam that uses a contrast (dye) that is placed into the cerebral blood vessels in the brain. This allows the vessels to be seen when a CT angiography or magnetic resonance angiography is taken. To place the contrast (dye) into the cerebral blood vessels, a catheter is inserted into a large artery and passed through to the carotid artery (main arteries to head and neck). Once the catheter is in place the contrast agent can be released. The state-of-the-art imaging equipment then captures images of the cerebral blood vessels. A cerebral angiography can help detect arteriovenous malformation (AVM), aneurysms, and carotid artery disease. This procedure is performed in a cardiovascular catheterization laboratory, with local anesthesia.
