Dr. Trong B. Nguyen, MD is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, Fellowship-trained in Sports Medicine. Dr. Nguyen received his Undergraduate Degree in Cell and Molecular Biology at UCLA. While pursuing his academic degree, he was an accomplished athlete and four-year Varsity Letterman for the UCLA Mens Volleyball team under the leadership of the legendary Coach Al Scates. During Dr. Nguyens years as a member, the team captured national championships in 1995 and 1996.
Dr. Nguyen completed his undergraduate career as a PACC-10 Gold Medal Finalist and was selected as a GTE and MPSF Academic All American. While working towards his medical degree from UC San Diego, he pursued his Olympic aspirations and played for the Mens National Indoor Volleyball Team in 1999. There he participated in the Pan-American Games in Canada and competed in the trials for the Sydney Olympics. After medical school, he completed his residency training in New York at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine - Montefiore Medical Center program, where he excelled in the specialty of orthopaedic surgery.
He decided to return to his native Southern California to sub-specialize in sports surgery and the care of athletes. He completed his fellowship in Sports Medicine and Joint Reconstruction at the ACGME-accredited Southern California Center for Sports Medicine in Long Beach, CA, where he trained with world-renowned orthopaedic surgeons, including former President of the AAOS, Dr. Douglas Jackson; well-published and world-renowned shoulder and elbow specialist, Dr. David Morrison; and internationally-recognized, Dr. Peter Kurzweil. During his tenure, he was the team physician for Cal State Long Beach, including the mens and womens basketball teams. He also was the team physician for the Wilson High School Football team.
Dr. Nguyen advocates for the health and well being of his patients, whether that entails surgery or non-surgical treatment such as rehabilitation and injury prevention. His philosophy in medicine and surgery centers on the relationship between the surgeon and the patient and how vital this interaction is to having successful outcomes. He believes that making decisions about ones health needs to be a team effort, and therefore emphasizes listening to his patients and their needs and concerns. He strongly believes in educating his patients about their problems so that they are informed about their diagnosis, treatment options and prognosis. Dr. Nguyen also prefers to work closely with Primary Medical Doctors or Providers (PMD or PMP) to keep them involved with the care as well.

He has reviewed numerous journal publications, including The Journal of Arthroscopy and Related Research and the Journal for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. With his championship accomplishments and disciplined lifestyle, Dr. Nguyens personal striving for excellence can be seen in his medical practice. With years of personal experience and the mindset of an athlete, he understands the physical stresses the body endures through sports as well as daily activities. Dr. Nguyen has always had an affinity for sports, athletics, and an active lifestyle. His other interests include basketball, mountain climbing, camping, scuba diving, kayaking, tennis, golf, and art.
