“Cancer is a devastating illness that can challenge a lifetime of beliefs. As a social worker in the new cancer center at Orange Coast Memorial, my goal is to help patients through this complex emotional process while they come to terms with the physical aspects of the disease. In addition to contacting each newly diagnosed breast cancer patient by phone, I visit people hospitalized due to the disease. Understandably, they’re often frightened and concerned about the effect their illness will have on loved ones. I help them cope with these and other issues through individual counseling. I also facilitate support groups for people dealing with various types of cancer, bereavement and caregiving issues. I love my work and Orange Coast Memorial. The patient-centered care and spirit of cooperation among staff members make the hospital a very special place to work.”
