Future Todd Cancer Pavilion Centralizes Cancer Care
Next year, when patients walk into the spacious, new 64,000-square-foot pavilion at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute (TCI) at Long Beach Memorial, they will find themselves immersed in an environment designed with one goal in mind: physical and emotional healing. Merging a soothing, spa-like setting, a welcoming staff and a comprehensive range of services under one roof, the Todd Cancer Pavilion will enable patients, their families and a multidisciplinary team of experts to collaborate for the best treatment outcomes.
Taking On Cancer - And Winning
Half of all men and a third of all women will develop cancer in their lifetimes. Although cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the United States, a growing number of survivors are living active and healthy lives thanks to improved early detection and advanced technologies.
Given these statistics, expanded and less fragmented treatment services are needed. Currently, as a leading center for cancer care in the region, TCI provides customized therapies for more than 1,800 newly diagnosed patients annually. With the current space reaching capacity, the Todd Cancer Pavilion will meet the growing needs of the community.
“This is something that is long overdue,” says Philip J. DiSaia, M.D., medical director of TCI. “Patients will have a one-stop shop to see numerous physicians in the same building on the same day. They will also have access to chemotherapy, acupuncture and aromatherapy.”
Corinne Garthoff, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 34, understands the stress of driving between doctors’ offices and hospitals to have various tests and receive chemotherapy.
“You have enough to think about during this time. Any help makes all the difference,” says Corinne, who underwent successful surgeries and treatment at Long Beach Memorial. She now gives back by mentoring newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
TCI physicians are nationally renowned, and patients benefit from the most advanced care. According to Cathy Kopy, TCI executive director, the Todd Cancer Pavilion will merge superior care with efficiency and convenience for the growing number of patients.
The entire second floor will primarily serve women with breast and gynecological cancers. The MemorialCare Breast Center at Long Beach Memorial, accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, will be the anchor. Women at all risk levels are assured the most current evidence-based therapies and the latest screening tools, including digital mammography, breast ultrasound and breast MRI, all interpreted by a dedicated team of female radiologists who specialize in breast health.
At the Ambulatory Infusion Center, patients receiving chemotherapy will have numerous comforts, including temperature-controlled chairs, blanket warmers and a TV in each treatment space. In addition, a treatment-planning room allows physicians the opportunity to partner for the best treatment outcomes for patients.
In serving patients from early diagnosis through survivorship, Long Beach Memorial recognizes that the best cancer care not only requires traditional medicine to treat the body but also attends to the patient’s emotional and spiritual health.
In the Integrated Cancer Medicine Center, patients can participate in an array of holistic programs ranging from acupuncture and massage therapy to yoga and nutrition classes. A rooftop garden will lend patients and visitors a calming space with fresh air, greenery and respite for those who need it.
Much like a medical concierge, nurse navigators are committed to simplifying all aspects of care for patients so they can focus solely on getting well. And a psychosocial oncology team will offer one-on-one counseling, family counseling, peer mentoring services and support groups.
“The pavilion will be unique,” Kopy says. “Everyone is there to support you and your family. We want people to know they’re in a special place.”
