On Thursday, Sept. 19, the mental health community of Long Beach came together for a special open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony as the MemorialCare Center for Mental Health & Wellness at Community Hospital Long Beach opened its doors to introduce its newest mental health services.
To help celebrate the milestone, Community Hospital Long Beach leaders were joined by mental health advocate and First Lady of Long Beach, Nancy Foster, and Assemblymember, Bonnie Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, who presented the Center for Mental Health & Wellness with a certificate of recognition.
“We’ve been working so hard to get these programs up and running, so we’re really excited to finally share our work with the community,” says Hopey Witherby, clinical director, Center for Mental Health & Wellness, Community Hospital Long Beach. “With the addition of these new programs, Community Hospital Long Beach truly is a one-stop-shop for mental health services in Long Beach.”
After the ceremony, guests got a behind-the-scenes look at the new Center for Mental Health & Wellness, where patients receive treatment for a range of mental health conditions. The tours highlighted music therapy and group therapy available at the new partial hospitalization/intensive outpatient program, as well as the newest treatment for depression, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy offered at the new outpatient psychiatric clinic.
The celebration continued into the evening as guests showed their support for mental health by adding their photos and signatures to a six foot wall symbolizing Community Hospital Long Beach’s commitment to mental health care in Long Beach.
“As a not-for-profit community based hospital, Community Hospital Long Beach is constantly reinvesting in itself to bring better patient care programs and new technology to Long Beach,” says Diana Hendel, PharmD, CEO, Long Beach Memorial, Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach and Community Hospital Long Beach. “Over the past two years, the MemorialCare Health System along with the new leadership at Community Hospital Long Beach, have made tremendous progress to improve the availability of mental health care. Starting with the renaming of its behavioral health unit to the MemorialCare Center for Mental Health & Wellness just four months ago, and now with the addition of its newest mental health programs created to ensure that nobody is left behind.”
In addition to the new partial hospitalization/intensive outpatient program and the psychiatric outpatient clinic, the Center for Mental Health & Wellness offers a 28-bed psychiatric acute inpatient treatment program, a geriatric psychiatry program and one of the regions only perinatal mood and anxiety disorder programs with both inpatient and outpatient care.
